What if～? を使って、「もし～が起きたらどうする？」というネガティブな出来事を予想・仮定・懸念するパターンの練習をします。仮定法現在形を使って動詞は過去形にする人もいますが、この練習では、現在形のままで行います。

◇代入語の言い方と意味を理解しながら練習しましょう。

【the deal falls through 取引や交渉が失敗/不成立に終わる】
What if the deal falls through?

【they cancel the order 彼らが注文をキャンセルする】
What if they cancel the order?

【they don’t renew the contract 彼らが契約を更新しない】

【they run into trouble 彼らが困難に陥る、トラブルに直面する】

（make it to～ ～に間に合う、～に出席する、～に達する、～までたどり着く）

【he didn’t make it to the meeting 彼がミーティングに間に合わなかったら、間に合わなかったとしたら】

（これは過去のことを言っている場合もありますし、仮定法現在だと考えると「万が一ミーティングに間に合わないとしたら」と現在のことを仮定法過去で言っているとも取れる表現です。状況次第で判断しましょう。）

（the delivery was not on time これも過去のこととも現在のこととも取れる表現です。文法的には過去のことと考えられます。もし仮定法現在なら be 動詞は was でなく were となるべきだからです。現実には was にしてしまう人も非常に多い表現です。）

◇代入語の言い方と意味を理解しましょう。

【Let’s not go there now. その話題は今はやめておこう、そっち方面の話は今はやめておこう】
（go there とは字義通りには「そこへ行く」ですが、このように「そっち方面の話」という意味でも使います。話者が、その話題を取り上げてほしくない何かの理由がある時に使いがちな表現です。）

【Let’s not get into that right now. その件に立ち入るのは今はやめておこう】

【Let’s not get too excited. エキサイトしすぎないようにしよう】

【Let’s not keep our hopes too high. 期待しすぎるのはやめておこう】

【Let’s not worry too much. 心配しすぎはやめとこう】

【Let’s not be so pessimistic. そんなに悲観的にならないようにしよう】

【Let’s not be so negative. そんなに否定的にならないようにしよう】

【Let’s not pursue this any further. この件をこれ以上追いかけるのはやめよう】
（pursue （仕事などを）続行する、先に進める、（案件などを）追いかける 達成しようとする）

【Let’s not lose our focus. フォーカスを失わないようにしよう】

【Let’s not go off on a tangent. 話が脱線しないようにしよう、話が脇道にそれないようにしよう】
（tangent 議論などの脱線、（数学の）タンジェント）
