◇関係代名詞や関係副詞は、より効率よく、要領よく意図を伝えるために活用します。そのため、使われるパターンというのは自然に限られてきます。唯一の例外は契約書です。whose はあまり使いません。ここでは、頻繁に口にされるパターンを学習します。
目的格の関係代名詞、that , which, whom は省略します。



◇それぞれの文を聞き、関係代名詞や関係副詞を使って文をひとつにしましょう。

【I have a big project. 私は大きなプロジェクトを抱えている。】
【It’s due tomorrow. そのプロジェクトは明日が期限だ。】
=I have a big project which is due tomorrow.
私は明日が期限の大きなプロジェクトを抱えている。

【He has a new secretary. 彼には新しい秘書がいる。】
【She’s a great help. 彼女は大きな助けだ。】
=He has a new secretary who is a great help.
彼には大きな助けとなる新しい秘書がいる。

【She is the only person. 彼女だけがその人物だ。】
【She speaks Japanese. 彼女は日本語を話す。】
=She is the only person that speaks Japanese.
彼女だけが日本語を話す人物だ。(日本語を話すのは彼女しかいない。)
=She’s the only person who speaks Japanese.
彼女だけが日本語を話す人物だ。
(先行詞に最上級, first, only, best など強い限定的な修飾語がついているときは that を使います。先行詞が人で主格の場合は who を使うことも可能です。)

【We experimented with the program. 私達はそのプログラムを試してみた。】
【It didn’t meet our needs. そのプログラムは私達のニーズを満たさなかった。】
=We experimented with the program, which didn’t meet our needs.
私達はそのプログラムを試してみたがニーズを満たさなかった。

【They had an offer. 彼らにはオファーがあった。】
【We just couldn’t refuse the offer. 私達はそれをどうしても断ることができなかった。】
=They had an offer we just couldn’t refuse.
彼らには、私達がどうしても断れないオファーがあった。(あまりに魅力的なオファーだったので断れなかった。)
(That は the offer が目的語なので省略。)

【This is the best proposal so far. これは今までのところベストの企画案だ。】
【We have received this proposal. 私達はこの企画案を受け取った。】
=This is the best proposal we’ve received so far.
これは私達が受け取った企画案の中で今のところベストだ。
(so far 今までのところ)
(proposal 提案(書)、企画案、申し込み、申し出、提言、提議)

【I met a woman at a karaoke bar yesterday. きのうカラオケバーで一人の女性にあった。】
【The woman was a well-known entrepreneur. その女性は著名な企業家だった。】
=The woman I met at a karaoke bar yesterday was a well-known entrepreneur.
 私がきのうカラオケバーであった女性は著名な企業家だった。

【This is the new model. これがその新しいモデルだ。】
【I was talking about this model the other day. 私はこのモデルについて先日話していた。】
=This is the new model I was talking about the other day.
これが、私が先日話していた新しいモデルだ。

【That is a good restaurant. あそこはいいレストランだ。】
【We can take our clients to that restaurant. 私達は客をあのレストランに連れて行ける。】
=That is a good restaurant to take our clients to.
あそこは客を連れて行くのにいいレストランだ。
(a good restaurant to which to take our clients でもよいが口語では a good restaurant to take our clients to とする人が多いです。)

【We have three new employees. うちには3人の新入社員がいる。】
【All of them seem very capable. 彼らの全員が非常に有能なようだ。】
=We have three new employees, all of whom seem very capable.
うちには3人の新入社員がいるが、全員が非常に有能なようだ。
(capable 能力がある、有能な、自分でできる、手腕のある)

【We have three choices. 我々には3つの選択肢がある。】
【None of the choices seems appealing. その選択肢の一つも魅力的に思えない。】
=We have three choices, none of which seems appealing.
我々には3つの選択肢があるが、その一つとして魅力的には思えない。
(appealing 魅力的な)

【He made two suggestions. 彼は二つの提案をした。】
【Both suggestions seem very reasonable. 提案のどちらも非常に妥当に思える。】
=He made two suggestions both of which seem very reasonable.
彼は非常に妥当に思える二つの提案をした。
(reasonable 妥当な、(値段などが)それほど高くない、まあまあの、分別のある、まっとうな)

【This is the kind of situation. これは、そういったタイプの状況だ。】
【I want to avoid a situation like this. 私はこういう状況を避けたい。】
=This is the kind of situation I want to avoid. これは、私が避けたいタイプの状況だ。
(That は省略)

【That’s the last thing. それは、最後の事柄だ。】
【We want to do that. 我々はそれをしたい。】
=That’s the last thing we want to do.
それは我々が行う最後の事柄だ。→ それだけは避けたい。
(That は省略)

【The person would be Kim. その人物はキムだ。】
【You want to talk to the person. あなたはその人物と話したい。】
=The person you want to talk to would be Kim.
あなたが話したい人物はキムだ。→ あなたが話すべき相手はキムだ。
(want to やわらかく提案する時に使える表現です。)

【I know someone. 私は誰かを知っている。】
【He can help you with that. 彼はその件であなたを助けることができる。】
=I know someone who can help you with that.
私はその件であなたの助けになれる人を知っている。

【John knows the most about this project. ジョンはこのプロジェクトについて最も知っている。】
【The guy is John. その男性はジョンだ。】
=(1) John is the guy who knows the most about this project.
ジョンがこのプロジェクトについて最も知っている男性だ。
=(2) The guy who knows the most about this project is John.
このプロジェクトについて最も知っている男性はジョンだ。
(guy 「男性」の意味で、ややカジュアルな言い方です。打ち解けた雰囲気の会話や親しい同僚とのメールなどでは使って良い表現です。)

【That is the reason. それが理由だ。】
【They don’t want to renew the contract. 彼らは契約更新をしたくない。】
=(1) That’s the reason they don’t want to renew the contract.
それが彼らが契約更新したがらない理由だ。
=(2) That’s why they don’t want to renew the contract.
それが彼らが契約更新したがらない理由だ。
(この why は関係副詞で That’s the reason why の the reason を省略したと考えてよいです。)

◆補足説明
That’s the reason why… と reason と why の両方を使う人が英語ネイティブでもいますが、ややくどい言い方になります。一方、That’s how は本来は That’s the way how の way が省略されたものと考えられます。
ですが、That’s the way how… と、way と how の両方を使うのは「奇妙」ということになっています。That’s the way… または That’s how… のどちらかになります。

【That’s the year. それがその年だ。】
【They opened their first franchise that year. 彼らは最初のフランチャイズをオープンした。】
=(1) That’s the year they opened their first franchise.
それが彼らが最初のフランチャイズをオープンした年だ。
=(2) That’s when they opened their first franchise.
それが彼らが最初のフランチャイズをオープンした時だ。

【That’s the place. そこがその場所だ。】
【They opened their flag ship restaurant and hotel there.】彼らはレストランとホテルのフラッグシップ店をそこでオープンした。
=(1) That’s where they opened their flag ship restaurant and hotel.
そこが彼らが、レストランとホテルのフラッグシップ店をオープンした場所だ。
=(2) That’s the place they opened their flag ship restaurant and hotel.
そこが彼らが、レストランとホテルのフラッグシップ店をオープンした場所だ。
